Vänern’s Majestic Archipelago

PADDLE IN VÄNERSKÄRGÅRDEN

Discover Vänern and the Lurö Archipelago by kayak! The archipelago is the largest in Vänern, consisting of both large islands and countless small, barren skerries. Lurö Archipelago has a long and fascinating history, and if the weather is right, we can visit various lighthouses, the old monastery ruins on Lurö Island, and a well-preserved fishing cabin on the island of Vithall.

If you're interested in birds, there are many nesting seabirds to observe, including sea eagles and osprey. In spring and autumn, Lurö Archipelago is a popular stopover for waders and other migratory birds. The flora is unique on some islands, offering plenty to discover. When hunger strikes, we’ll enjoy freshly caught fish from Vänern, accompanied by local ingredients from the surrounding nature.

Tours depart from Ekenäs, at the far end of Värmlandsnäs. In case of unpredictable weather, tours may be moved to other archipelagos (Millesvik, Tösse, Yttre Bodane) or canceled.

I AM YOUR GUIDE

My name is Katrin,

I engaged in various conservation efforts, which fueled my passion for nature and sustainability.

I found my true home by Lake Vänern, where I now have the privilege of working with what I love most: nature, biodiversity, and outdoor experiences. My career path has taken many turns, but everything has fallen into place. With a background in landscape development, tourism, and conservation, I have worked in rural development, regional traffic planning, and as the operations manager for Glaskogen Nature Reserve, one of Sweden's largest outdoor recreation areas. Additionally, I have extensive experience in garden design, plant care, and environmental sustainability.

Why Paddle with Me? My deep connection to water has led me to kayaking, sailing, and working as a volunteer sea rescuer. Over the years, I have gained extensive knowledge about Lake Vänern's flora, fauna, history, and ecological significance. With professional kayaking certifications and safety training, I ensure that your experience on the water is both safe and unforgettable.

Bird Paddling
The birdlife around Lake Vänern is amazing! There are many different species of waterfowl and birds of prey, and during spring and autumn, migratory birds pass over the Lurö Archipelago. The migratory birds—especially waders—like to rest on the islands, which have been restored for birdlife purposes. You can find white-tailed eagles, ospreys, various terns and gulls, loons, bitterns, stilt sandpipers, and ducks. There is also rich birdlife to be seen in Yttre Bodane. Both archipelagos are nature reserves and incredibly beautiful. In addition to fascinating birdlife, there are many other interesting animal species and plants to discover.

Our guide is an expert on local birdlife and leads small groups to interesting spots where there is time to observe, photograph, and sometimes land. Of course, we respect nature and the various protected areas. There’s also time for a coffee break, with local delicacies served.
